MEI665: FUNDAMENTALS OF MICROSCOPY FOR FORENSIC DOCUMENT EXAMINERS: BASIC THEORY AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS (FORMERLY COM405)
The stereomicroscope is one of the most important tools used by the Forensic Document Examiner (FDE). This workshop provides a strong foundation in the workings of the stereomicroscope and presents a number of practical exercises to enhance the professional Forensic Document Examiner's proficiency.
Joseph G. Barabe, the Principal Instructor for this Forensic Document Examiners course, has been contributing to the field of forensic document examination for over 10 years and has presented and published photographic documentation of FDE phenomena. Mr. Barabe also consults in forensic document examinations including forged and altered documents; paper, ink, typewriter and toner comparisons; writing sequence determinations; and altered image studies.

- Basic optics, image formation and factors affecting resolution
- Optimizing image quality for viewing and photomicrography
- Image capture techniques: making high quality digital images with your microscope
- Illumination methods: oblique light, ring light, co-axial illumination, ultraviolet fluorescence
- Special problems: pen type determination, erasures, traces, sequence of writing determinations, printing process identification
- Forensic Document Examiners who want to improve their ability to answer common document problems with the microscope.
- Stereomicroscope for each student; other microscopes available for use
- Handouts to supplement lecture and lab material
- Exemplars of pen tracings and a large variety of printing processes
Students are expected to successfully complete a variety of tasks in the form of hands-on exercises, laboratory exercises, identifications of unknowns, and quizzes. In addition, the students are required to have 100% attendance during the course, participate in class, complete a student evaluation form and pre and post course assessment forms.
The student is notified at the end of the course whether or not they have successfully completed the requirements of the course based on:
- 100% attendance
- class participation
- completion of all course material
- completed and signed student evaluation form
- completed pre and post course assessment forms
Upon successfully meeting these requirements, a student is awarded a certificate of completion and IACET CEU credits, if available. Those who have not successfully passed the course requirements do not receive a certificate or IACET CEU credits.
