CHM505: SPOT TESTING FOR CHARACTERIZATION OF MATERIALS (FORMERLY COM870)
This course is based on the accumulation of research and development from a wide range of testing protocols and is focused on the needs of conservators.  Conservators and other researchers often must characterize the material nature of artifacts, accretions or deposits and contextual materials. Spot tests do not require expensive instruments or specialists expertise and can be particularly useful and minimally intrusive. The class combines lecture and laboratory sessions for hands-on practicum in preparation, testing, and interpretation of results for a representative range of organic and inorganic materials tests covered by the text book.

Course Outline

  1. Micro-sampling techniques, including the electrolysis of minute amounts of sample material onto filter paper.
  2. Testing of a range of artifact materials, including inorganics such as metals and minerals, and organics such as proteins, cellulosics, and plastics.
  3. Testing of contextual materials, including surface deposits, soils, and stains.
  4. Interpretation of results, chemical processes and stages of a reaction, and effects of interference materials.

Suggested Prerequisites

Satisfactory Completion Requirements

Students are expected to successfully complete a variety of tasks in the form of hands-on exercises, laboratory exercises, identifications of unknowns, and quizzes. In addition, the students are required to have 100% attendance during the course, participate in class, complete a student evaluation form and pre and post course assessment forms.

The student is notified at the end of the course whether or not they have successfully completed the requirements of the course based on:

  • 100 % attendance
  • class participation
  • completion of all course material
  • completed and signed student evaluation form
  • completed pre and post course assessment forms.

Upon successfully meeting these requirements, a student is awarded a certificate of completion and IACET CEU credits, if available. Those who have not successfully passed the course requirements do not receive a certificate or IACET CEU credits.
