INS535: AN INTRODUCTION TO FORENSIC DOCUMENT EXAMINATION INSTRUMENTATION: BASIC THEORY AND PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS (FORMERLY COM404)
The Electrostatic Detection Apparatus (ESDA), used for indented writing detection, and the Video Spectral Comparator (VSC), for UV/IR imaging in reflection/absorption and fluorescence modes, are two of the most important instruments used in the examination of questioned documents. This workshop provides a strong foundation in the basic theory behind these two instruments along with practical use of each in actual case work.

* If a scheduled course is full, you may be placed in a waiting list.
- Terms and concepts of electromagnetic spectrum, ultraviolet, infrared, infrared absorption, infrared reflection, infrared transmittance, fluorescence, and luminescence.
- Terms and concepts of electrostatic detection of indented writing.
- Functioning of cameras, light sources and filters, the video spectral comparison device and an electrostatic detection device.
- Determine the types of examinations appropriate to a document examination case, and conduct basic infrared and indented writing examinations with the appropriate equipment.
- Limitations of these examinations and the types of opinions that can and can not be reached based on these examinations.
- Forensic Document Examiners – at all levels will benefit from this course, but especially examiners at the beginner and intermediate levels, as well as more advanced practitioners preparing for the Board of Forensic Document Examiners or other certification testing.
- Access to Electrostatic Detection Apparatus (ESDA) and Video Spectral Comparator (VSC)
- Handouts to supplement lecture and lab material
Students are expected to successfully complete a variety of tasks in the form of hands-on exercises, laboratory exercises, identifications of unknowns, and quizzes. In addition, the students are required to have 100% attendance during the course, participate in class, complete a student evaluation form and pre and post course assessment forms.
The student is notified at the end of the course whether or not they have successfully completed the requirements of the course based on:
- 100% attendance
- class participation
- completion of all course material
- completed and signed student evaluation form
- completed pre and post course assessment forms
Upon successfully meeting these requirements, a student is awarded a certificate of completion and IACET CEU credits, if available. Those who have not successfully passed the course requirements do not receive a certificate or IACET CEU credits.
