Spectral Interpretation

This course highlights the individual problem-solving techniques utilized to identify organic structures based on the spectra produced from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H & 13C), Infrared Spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry, and UV-Visible Spectroscopy. Students first learn an overview of the theory behind each instrument and the chemical mechanisms behind the data that is produced, followed by the construction of each instrument and an investigation of the individual components (e.g. energy sources, detectors) and their respective functions. Through numerous in-class exercises, an emphasis is placed on collective interpretation of the spectra from each instrument to determine the identity and structure of organic compounds.
